Cricket Bat Handle Types: Round, Oval or Semi-Oval?
Handle shape is easy to overlook because it sits under the grip. It can still change how securely the bat locates in the hands and how active the bottom hand feels.

A round handle feels similar across its axes and can make it easier to rotate the wrists. Players who like freedom through cuts, sweeps and inventive shots may enjoy that mobility. A player whose bottom hand already dominates may find that the same freedom needs control.
Oval handles
An oval handle is more pronounced across one axis. Many players feel that it locates the bat more clearly in the hands and discourages excessive bottom-hand rotation. The effect depends on where the oval sits and how much the grip masks it.
Semi-oval handles
Semi-oval is the middle ground and a common starting point when the player wants some location without an aggressively shaped handle. Retailer terminology is not perfectly consistent, so ask for a photograph or measurement if buying remotely.
Grip thickness can change the answer
One thick grip or two thinner grips can alter the effective shape, overall weight and balance. Very thick grips may quiet the bottom hand but can be awkward for smaller hands. Test the finished setup rather than a bare handle.
- Wear batting gloves.
- Set both hands in the real batting position.
- Check defensive control and wrist release.
- Do not choose solely by hand size.
- Re-test if the grip is changed.
